In our classroom, we have an “Economy System”. Each week, the students will earn (play) money for jobs they will perform in the classroom. Students will have an opportunity to earn extra money for things such as showing good manners, getting a compliment from another teacher, completing all weekly assignments on time, etc. Students may also lose part of their salary for things such as breaking classroom rules, leaving his/her name off of a paper, late/missing homework, etc.
From this system, students learn responsibility lessons. They learn to keep track of their money, and not to lose it. They learn how to save up for things that are important to them, instead of spending everything at once. They also learn the value of earning money, instead of just being given things for free. They take more pride in their work, their behavior, and in taking responsibility for their actions.
